Inspiration Artist - Peter Stewart
I have chosen to focus my extra research on Peter Steward, who explores the connection between architecture and people. He is a self-taught photographer who discovered his passion when travelling around Asia on a ten-year trip. Steward was amazed by the vast size of the buildings, experimenting with layers and patterns. Steward’s work presents living conditions and the individuality of people’s residence.

This image explores an apartment building through a repeated grid like structure. The symmetrical pattern of the building explores to the viewer how close one another live together. The warm tones in this image emphasise the homely and personalised inside of each of the people’s homes. This photo has a flat on perspective which allows the viewer to feel as though they are seeing into the homes of the inhabitants. The contrast between the harsh, gridded structure with the warmth of the windows emphasises the individuality of the people living within. Exploring how they are their own person and that they live in an individual space. From this image I wish to shoot photos of apartment buildings to explore how people choose to live in their houses. However, I hope to do this at night, allowing the window light to appear brighter to emphasise this personalisation.

I like This image is also taken of an apartment building, with a regular and repeating patterns of windows. However, this image is shot at night to highlight the colours of the windows. This emphasis of colour highlights the personalisation of the spaces. The warmth in these windows works to create a calming and homely atmosphere, adding to the individual differences in the space. The cooler tones in the image contrast the warm tones and emphasise the differences between people through the illustration of where they live. This image has mini frames within the photo, which allows the viewer to get a snapshot understanding into the lives of the people who live there. From this image I want to explore colour to emphasise the differences in people’s homes.

In conclusion, Stewart is an incredible artist who focused his work on exploring the construction of apartment buildings. He did this to explore people’s own and different ways of living in their homes. From Stewart’s work I would like to take inspiration from his idea of researching the way that people live in constructions. Exploring the differences within our society through the personalisation of homes. I want to explore colour and patterns to do this.
