Statement of Intent:
I have chosen to base my exam unit around the theme “Construction”. I hope to capture structures with strong leading lines and geometrical patterns. I also want to represent how people move through and around different architectural spaces. I plan on using monochromatic photography to enhance the gritty tones in images as well as bringing out the geometric shapes in buildings. I also plan on using colour to represent connections between constructions. I want to explore how people relate to and personalise the spaces that they live in.

My first artist review is Fernando Guerra. Guerra is a Portuguese photographer that has paved the way for architectural photography. Guerra captures lived in spaces, exploring how people move around their homes and cities. However, Guerra also has a focus on capturing harsh geometrical line and shapes in architectural buildings. Using monochromatic photography to enhance gritty tones and structures in some photos. Yet using pops of colour in others to explore emotions and connections. I have chosen this artist as I want to explore both harsh geometric structures and the movement of people around lived in spaces. I want to take inspiration from his photo ‘EPFL Quartier Nord in Ecublens, Switzerland’ exploring separate lives in one setting through there homes and spaces.

My second artist is Sebastiao Salgado. Salgado is a well renown Brazilian photography who was once a part of Magnum Photos. Much of Salgado’s work is based around journalism photography, reporting on human rights through the art of a photo. However, I have chosen to zoom in on his photography of structures and architecture. Salgado is best known for his striking monochromatic style which enhances the gritty nature of the setting. The use of leading lines in his photography helps to create intricate images with interesting narratives that capture and guide the eye. I aim to take inspiration from his 'Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, 1995' photo. Using repeated shapes of windows to capture a snapshot view into the world of the owner.

These two artists will help me plan and take my photoshoots enabling me to have a clear idea of what I want to capture and present. I plan on using these photographers to enable me to perfect my composition and style of photographer.

Throughout this unit I wish to take the viewer on a journey through construction. Starting with the process that constructing takes, then exploring the ways that people utilise constructions. Finally, I wish to explore how people live in constructions, personalising them to how best suits them.
