Creating emotion and connection

These are the photos I have chosen to manipulate both physically and digitally.

For these edits I printed a photo on acetate and layered it onto another photo. I then sprayed water on the acetate to create drops on the surface. I played around with the position of the photos as well as the position of the water. In the final edit I placed paper over the top half of the image to cover it and then sprayed the bottom half with water. I did this to create more textures in the water.

For this experiment I applied filters to an area that I selected using the polygonal lasso tool on photoshop. I individually selected the different areas to create a stained-glass effect. I chose to do this as I thought the different colours reflected different emotions within the image.

For this edit I increased the saturation and vibrancy of the image and turned the women on the right-hand side into black and white. I did this to create emotional distance between the pair and the women. I then used the smudge tool to blend the women into the pair and blend the pair together. This creates a sense of losing connection to the people around us and an emotional strain as the people try to cling onto each other.

For this edit I followed a similar prosses of using the smudge tool to blend the women on the right hand side into the pair on the left. Which again creates a sense of loss of connection to the people and places surrounding us. It also adds an emotional strain on the people as the people try to cling onto each other. However, for this edit I inverted the black and white and kept the women in colour. I prefer this as the monochromatic surroundings place emphasis on the harsh geometric lines of the structure creating a brutalist undertone to the image.

For this experiment I kept the women in the far right and the central man in colour whilst making the rest of the image black and white. This highlights the two different worlds that people are living in even though they are in the same area. It also creates a connection between the two even though they aren’t aware that each other are there. By placing emphasis on these individuals the viewer is able to begin to understand their perspectives and how they are viewing their surroundings. To again place emphasis on these individuals I removed some people in an attempt to create a quieter and more focused image.

To create this edit I selected the people on photoshop and put them in colour whilst the rest of the image is in black and white. This places emphasis on the emotional connection between the two men. By making the surroundings monochromatic the harsh realities of their work becomes more apparent.

For this edit I took the previous experiment and smudges the man's face on the right to create a further emotional connection between the two. By removing the man's face and emotive expression the viewer is able to create their own visual representation of the man's emotion. This edit shows the connection between people in the world around us that would otherwise go unnoticed.

For this edit I selected the man and put him in black and white to distance him from the image and the viewer and to create an emotional separation between both the viewer and the man, and the women and the man. The contrast between the vibrant shop front and the monochromatic man help to emphasise the separation between the two. To further this distance I blended the women’s face into her phone in an attempt to show how we can lose connection with the world that is around us. These two edit help to emotionally distance the individuals from each other and from the viewer.

For this edit I exposed the image in the dark room and the splashed and painted on the developer. I did this to remove the people and create the pier as a focal point to the image. The chaotic brush strokes create a feeling that something is being lost or is falling. Which reflects the emotion that is lost by the monochromatic tone of the image.
