Exploring connections

These are the photos I have chosen to manipulate both physically and digitally.

For this edit I made the original image black and white and inverted it on photoshop. I then printed it on acetate and exposed the image in the darkroom. Before I did this I wrapped a piece of string around the woman in the bus and the building at the top of the image. I did this in order to connect the two isolated aspects of the image and suggest that they are connected. This makes the viewer think that many aspects of life we view can be connected without our knowledge.

To create this edit, I selected the window of the bus that the woman is in aswell as the slither of lights within the building and then made the rest of the image monochrome. By doing this I was able to highlight the isolation of the woman by bringing emphasis to her. I also was able to connect her with the building which is something I explored in another edit. I then took a warm liht orange from present in both parts and used this to draw around the buildings. This line creates a connection from the women and the building to the whole image and creates a cohesive colour pallet.

To create this edit I used to smudge and blur tools to merge the faces of the people either into each other or into their viewpoint. For the couple I aimed to blend and merge their faces together in order to physically represent their emotional connection. For the women in the background I also did this to represent her involvement in her work, as well as removing her identity to allow to viewer to create their own narrative of the image.

To create this edit I followed a similar process to my last. This involved using the smudge and blur tool on photoshop to blend the faces of the subjects together. This blend physically represents the emotional bond between the two people. For this edit I wanted to create a motion to the still image, whilst still keeping a linear flowing aspect to the image that is repeated throughout. This blend of emotions creates a cohesive edit and emphasises the emotional connection between the two subjects.

For this edit, I made the image monochromatic on photoshop. I removed the colour in the image to remove some of the emotion in the photo. Due to colour being heavily associated with emotions, (which I explored in my last photoshoot) by removing this colour I was able to allow to viewer to create their own narrative of the image. Black and white also emphasises geometric patterns and structures, allowing the patterned floor to stand out more and create an interesting base that the subjects are situated around.

To create this edit I selected the people and duplicated them. I then made the rest of the image black and white and moved the duplicated colour people to the right, decreasing the opacity slightly. This creates a ghost like effect and adds an unsettling tone to the image. The cool tones in the blue of the uniform add to this unsettling tone. The colour in the uniforms connect the two workers and distance them from their surroundings. The physical connection through colour emphasises the workers emotional connection.

For this edit, I layered two different images from my chosen photos and made the image with the women black and white. I then layered the images in photoshop, decreasing the opacity of the monochromatic image and shifting it up and right slightly, until the yellow lines matched. I did this to create a ghostly and unsettling aspect to the image as though the women is haunting the space. This suggests that humans are interlinked, and many people experience similar versions of the world each day.

To create this edit I printed the photo of the two people in the café on acetate and then put it in a jar of water. I placed this jar on a reflective mirror surface and projected the image of the man behind. The idea behind the use of a jar is to emphasise the concept that my photos are a snapshot of someone’s life. Trapping the moment in a glass jar represents a memory and the minor yet significant moments that life can have. By using the image projected in the background it appears that the many is viewing in on someone else’s life. Just as I have tried to explore in my raw images through distancing the view by taking the image through a glass.
