Photoshoot 04 - Experiments
Emphasising class division and carelessness
These are the photos I have chosen to manipulate both physically and digitally.

For this image, I continued exploring the use of a coloured line but this time to connect two different subjects in the image. I selected an orange colour from the boy’s trousers and traced around the pigeon. I then did the same with a colour from the pigeon and traced around the boy. This connects the two different aspects of the image to show a temporary emotional connection between them.

For this edit, I made the photo black and white to remove the emotion from the image. Colour tends to be heavily associated with emotion, which was what I explored last photoshoot, therefore by removing some of this emotion I am able to isolate the journey of the person. I then draw a red line along the building and around the person in order to highlight the journey of the man. I then made the line appear to bend around the corner to place emphasis on the fading away of the man's life.

To create this edit I printed the photo of the tent photo on paper and the pigeon and boy photo on acetate. I then layered the two images on top of each other. I did this to show the unknown path that life can take, illustrating the innocence and naivety of the child. I think that the boy and the pigeon travelling towards the open blue tent creates a powerful image of not knowing what direction we are travelling in life. I like the chaos of this edit as it adds to the busyness of the initial image and emphasises the bustle of life.

I then did the edit in the darkroom – putting the tent (acetate) on the paper and exposing it first. Then removing that acetate and putting the acetate of the boy on after and exposing it. By the colour of the image being removed some of the chaos in the photo is removed too. Which emphasises the lines in the image leading towards the tent. Furthering the image of life's unknown progression.

For this edit, I kept the advert and the Burger King cup in colour whilst making the rest of the image black and white. This illustrates the contrast between different aspects of society. The bright red and pink colours portray the overconsumption interspersed in every aspect of our life. I then smudged the people together on either side of the image to highlight the emotional connecting between them as well as the carelessness of society as the walk past a homeless man and do nothing. This also isolates the man which furthers feeling of distress in the viewer.

To create this edit I started by cropping the initial image to control the narrative of the image. I wanted to highlight the irony between the women on the floor and the advert of “BIG SUMMER SAVERS”. To do this I kept the women and her bag and the advert in the top right in colour whilst making the rest of the image black and white. This connects the women and the advert and shows the overconsumption and lack of care for others in society.

For this edit, I cropped the image and removed all the noise in the image to focus the viewer on the man. This adds further intrigue about the man's actions and adds to the secrecy of the image. I cropped the photo to create a 50/50 split between the wall and the man to make the viewer feel as though they are in the image – almost peering round the wall.
